For some reason, Pakistani public always want attacking captains to lead them. Contrary to popular belief, defensive captains are always more successful than attacking captains! Take the example of Misbah. He took Pakistan to No. 1 in test rankings. Contrary to popular belief, Imran was not all attacking captain, he played with strategy! He went at No. 3 to see off that new ball in 92 WC! If he had not seen off that new ball, we wont have won the WC!! Therefore, I believe Azhar Ali should be made test and odi captain! Fakhar Zaman should be made t20 captain!!
Attacking captain always plays by the instinct and therefore he is not cautious enough to avoid the dangers whereas a defensive captain always wins cus he is prepared and proactive!! Inzamam was a great captain too imo for this reason!!

Ask yourself was Imran Khan Defensive Captain?

You will get right answer and please don't share with us, for we know it already.

There is a difference between being aggressive and plain reckless! Imran may have been aggressive but he wasnt reckless! He also planned things and played with a strategy!!

What our fans want our limited overs team to do is to play bang bang cricket, go after the bowling, no dot balls. T20 cricket can be played in that way but i am sorry, odi cricket is a 50 over game and you need to devise a strategy to bat in a 50 overs game and you need to play phases and build an innings, only then you can go after the bowling when you have wickets in hand!! What successful teams do is lay a foundation in 30 overs and then blaze away in last 20 whereas what our supporters and coaches like Waqar Younus make team do is to score 500 straightaway without laying any foundation. As a result, we lose wickets upfront and get bowled out cheaply!!

We labeled Misbah as tuk tuk and anyone who blocks is labeled in a similar manner!! There are 300 deliveries in a 50 over match and you need to make sure you bat all those 300 deliveries. If you manage to bat 300 deliveries without playing recklessly, you will reach 300+ almost everytime on a good wicket and where its doing a bit, you will atleast get 250 and when you have runs on the board, then you will expect any Pakistani bowling to win the game for u cus bowling is traditionally our strength!! All we need is runs on the board which we fail to do many times but when we do post runs on the board, we win atleast 7 out of 10 times!!

Lawyerji question was " Defensive or Aggressive), now you are adding adjectives to it as per your convenience.

This is not your application paper to keep on adding to it.

I should have described it in a more appropriate manner. WE want aggressive captains but we dont want reckless captains!! Practice of labeling a player that blocks as tuk tuk should be abolished!! If he is doing tuk tuk he is doing that for the betterment of the team! You want your middle order to bat majority of the overs! You want your openers and No. 3 to go after the bowling and provide a quick start unless you are playing in Australia, England, NZealand or South Africa!! If the middle order will get out playing reckless shots or does not bat overs for any reason, then team will not succeed! Onus is always on middle order to put runs on the board for you! Pressure comes on them in a crunch situation like it did in mohali semi final!! Misbah did put those runs on the board but that game we did not lose cus of Misbah contrary to popular belief. You went with only 2 pacers and Razzaq. You did not have a new ball bowler and Wahab and Ajmal had to be utilized early on. As a result, Raina it was or Jadeja cashed in at the death when Gul, who was having a bad day was bowling!! Shoaib Akhtar needed to play that match in place of Razzaq in my opinion! There is no way you can drop a big match player like Shoaib in a World Cup semi final against India! Wahab although he did well but he did not get the support that was needed from other pacers! Gul had an off day but we can excuse him for that!! Razzaq was not good enough to bowl more than 2 overs in that game!! We needed a Shoaib Akhtar to bowl to Sachin and Sehwag with that new ball!! This should have been the team in that 2011 Mohali Semi Final:

    1. Hafeez
    2. Kamran Akmal
    3. Asad Shafiq
    4. Younus Khan
    5. Misbah
    6. Umar Akmal
    7. Shahid Afridi c
    8. Wahab Riaz
    9. Umar Gul
    10. Saeed Ajmal
    11. Shoaib Akhtar

Intelligent captain is preferred over attacking or defensive captain. Intelligent captain can change to attack or defense based on the situation.

I possess a different opinion on this subject.

Neither we need attacking captain nor defensive, because, in my book these two terms have been overused by almost everybody who follows Pakistan cricket.

We need a captain who understands the game and change his game plan according to the situation and dont look towards coaches and dressing room, when plan A fails and opposition is on the surge. Therefore, we need a proactive captain, who can analyse the situation as it changes (on the fly) and its game plan accordingly.

Unfortunately most of our captains have been "reactive" (and not proactive), because they go with traditional & old school approach, which opposition easily counter in the blink of an eye and than they have no answer but to wait for opposition to make mistake.

Cricket has become so fast these days that you dont have luxury of time, wherein you will wait for opposition to commit mistake. If you do that, than opposition will take away the game from you. And thats the reason why we lost so many limited over games.
