ISLAMABAD - Out of favour all-rounder Sohail Tanveer has shifted to Lahore with his family to prepare himself for the three-way challenge coming his way thick and fast.

While talking exclusively to The Nation on Thursday, Sohail said he had long been making up his mind for shifting to Lahore to get proper utilisation of National Cricket Academy (NCA) facilities as it was very difficult to maintain fitness and work properly in Rawalpindi.

“I had thought long and hard, discussed with my family and after consulting with all, I am moving to Lahore. It would definitely help me a great deal as I would be able to train utilising top facilities and would be more focused to prepare myself well for the coming events.”

Tanveer, who was the most successful bowler for Pakistan in T20 version last year, said it was highly disappointed when one is left out from the squad, even if one had not performed well and if you had done quite well, then it hurts more.

“Yes, I was frustrated and depressed over my exclusion from the New Zealand T20 and ODI squads, but that is past now. I am fully focused on first Pakistan Super League as it would be a huge platform for not only seniors, but also for the juniors. The players had the golden opportunity of catching the eyes of the chief selector and rest of the cricketing world through their performances. I had long experience of playing in different leagues of the world. The UAE wickets best suited to my type of bowlers and I would double up my efforts as I am fully aware my place is very much on the line for the World T20 in India and then Asia Cup, which would be another opportunity for me, as it would be played on T20 format.” He said Pakistan were playing under enormous pressure in New Zealand in T20s, otherwise, the team was quite capable of beating any given side.

When asked about where he thinks Pakistan lacked and what was the main reason of their worst defeats in last two T20s against Kiwis, Sohail said the bowling in the death overs let Pakistan down as bowlers were unable to handle the pressure in the later stages of the match.

He also pointed out top order failure and termed it a matter of grave concern for the team management and hoped that head coach Waqar and other coaching staff must have noticed the issue and they would address these areas in ODIs.

“Although Pakistan played quite well in the first ODI and was in supreme control as Kiwis had lost too many wickets with less than 100 runs on the board, but bowlers failed to finish them off. But batting should take lime share of blame, as even 280 was not a huge target. Kiwi grounds are not as big as we face in other parts of the world. Had batsman played sensibly, in my opinion the target was not such difficult.” When asked about return of M Amir to the national team and expectations level from Amir is too much, which hampered his performance, Sohail said it is never easy for any player to make strong comeback after a long layoff as things changes rapidly in short span of time.

“Five years or so is a long time. Amir is a top quality talent and no one should doubt about his abilities and class, but he needs time. I would request players, the PCB, masses and media to forgive Amir and give him some breathing space. Now he had served his sentence after accepting his mistake, I think this is enough. He should be given second chance and he would definitely bounce back as he needs some time, matches and work on his fitness levels. Though he had made quite an impact soon after the ban was lifted from him, but he must and others also keep this in mind that domestic and league cricket is different as compare to international cricket and especially when one is representing country. I have no doubt whatsoever about Amir being a world class stuff and he would soon start to produce his critics wrong and shut their mouths up with sensational performances.”

When asked about hopes of his inclusion in the World T20 squad, Sohail said it was not in his hands but vowed to train harder and produce best performances to impress the Board and the and the selectors. “I am quite sure, if I managed to produce performances, my place would be confirmed in the squad. I am a fighter and would force my way back into the national team. I had produced more than satisfactory performances in domestic cricket and anxiously waiting for the PSL to get started so I could prove my credentials,” Sohail concluded.

I think after serious hamering of Pak bowlers in NZ, management will ask him in squad as he is not kind of bowler who can easy leak runs plus he can hit big ones from nowhere and his leg side hacks brings boundries SIXES & FOURS at no 9 batting position.
