Faheem Ashraf has consistently been with the team for 2 years now, he does not offer anything with either bat or ball, yet we persist with him just because he has some sort of ability with the bat and is the only fast bowling 'all-rounder' in Pakistan.

Likewise, Yasir Shah has been with the LOI team for the past 2 series now because Shadab has an injury. Why? Just because he is the only other leg-spinner in Pakistan and playing someone like Nawaz or Umer Khan would mean we would have 2 left arm spinners in the same line up and no leg-spinner.

Usman Shinwari, one of our top wicket takers got dropped for Mohammad Hasnain, just because he adds extra pace to the side and they didn't want more players who only bowl between 140-145kph.

Now the question is, is it fair to play undeserving mediocre players just because they offer you variety options? Wouldn't someone like Nawaz (who by the way is nothing special himself) not outplay both Faheem and Yasir in 9 out of 10 games? Doesn't someone like Mohammad Amir bring more value to the team than Faheem Ashraf who will go for plenty and only hit 1 six to make up for it? Did Shinwari really deserved to be dropped just because another player has 3-4 more kphs up his sleeve?

This thread is not about individual players, it's about the fundamental question of whether it's better to play 5 performing right arm pacers or just pick 1 and go for 4 other average bowlers for the sake of variety...

Mickey is a big fan of bits n pieces players and we dont really have any other option other than Faheem as our pace-allrounder.

Besides, Arthur has his own favourites like Imad, Faheem, Amir, Babar, Yasir etc (some justified, some not) and he doesnt really fancy Shinwari, Junaid, Sohail Khan and Hafeez.

Personally i think Mickey has a big say in selection (contrary to the popular opinion that its all inzy ) and tbh Mickey is quite overrated if you take everything into consideration like having a dummy captain and big say in selections, basically he enjoys big powers with very poor output

Why do we even need to have a pace bowling all rounder just for the sake of having one? If our pace bowling allrounders aren't good enough why not just go with another pure fast bowler or a spin bowling all rounder?

This is what's hurting our team, we are selecting players just for covering all bases even if they are shit. Asif Ali is another one, has nothing to offer but plays because he can potentially hit the ball long.

No idea how Faheem makes it in the team over Hafeez. Hafeez is a better batsman and bowler.. especially considering the bowling is light on spin bowling.

They threw the game away today by selecting bakwas like Imam for t20s. Waste of spot in the team. Its like going on the field 10 men vs 12 when you play him.

Fahim has been extremely disappointing. Our poor luck is that we have no better fast bowling all rounder.

Hasan Ali is a much better all rounder than Faheem. A much better bowler and an equally good batsman. Faheem should not be in the playing XI.

He doesn't. Hafeez is not fit.

The only other batsman that was available was Abid Ali.

Good thread. This has been a character of the Pakistan set-up for a long time.

Very harsh to say Hasnain adds no substance. He has a lot of potential.

    Agree on Fahim & Yasir.

He was tried and tested in the Australia series, had 0 performance. You don't select non-performing players for a World Cup just because they add something different to the squad. This is the justification Inzi gave.

Hasnain's time would come after the World Cup. Just like Shaheen's came after the Champions Trophy. Just like Hasan Ali's came after the 2016 WT20.

Pakistan made the same mistake with Junaid Khan in 2011 where he warmed the bench for the whole tournament. Likewise with Ehsan Adil in 2015.

Versatility and variety should NOT come at the expense of performance.

Good post. It seems the think tank is just influenced by labels rather than performance.

Why nobody named Imam yet? Its a sin when you play the following shot in any format ...

No question about Faheem, who has been very ordinary with ball and bat, with once in a blue moon decent performance.

And as for Yasir, I literally, literally dont want to say something upon which I will regret latter - so in a nutshell, he shouldn't be anywhere near ANY limited over side.

Lots of fans missing Shadab, he's also this 50/50 type player in fact he has regressed from when he started. His performance against good teams is also average.

Imam is not in the team for any type of variety that he brings in. This thread is about players who are in the team purely because they are a 'fast bowling all rounder' or 'the sole leg spinner' or due to 'extra pace'
