So Quetta Gladiators have launched their twitter page. Azhar Ali and Sarfaraz promoted them so far which could be a sign that these two will be signed by them?

Well either he is assuming that Afridi will be on the Peshawar team or it is a certainty. Maybe the teams have pre agreed their platinums Icon players. In which case Afridi and YK please

I'm wondering if Yuvi just saw the name Afridi (Because Javed Afridi) and automatically assumed it was Shahid.

Think he knows both of them. Yuvi is a good mate of Afridi.. I remember during 2005 tour, Afridi invited him, Pathan and few other guys at home. Video must be some here on youtube.

No clue, surprised also if he joins Peshawar ahead of Karachi but at the end of the day probably wants to play for the team Javed Afridi owns and I do not see anything wrong with that? They are friends so maybe he wants to play for the team his friend is in charge of. Will help with marketing and advertisement of the team too. Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad teams have owners like ARY and Qatar Oils so they can get any player they want. JA is also heavily supporting the Shahid Afridi foundation so Lala will be grateful to his friend for helping him out too. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. Afterall what are friends for? Quetta and Peshawar it seems will have to battle it out to get who they want

I'd guess Islamabad takes Gayle first up and then Karachi gets Afridi. Surely they won't let him drop further down to Peshawar, right? If they do, maybe they have some sort of deal with them.

That is interesting developments. Whoever gets Afridi gets the most support coming to their matches, well Peshawar will have sold out venues anyway due to all the laborers but Afridi is a major crowd puller. If a team wants to market their team then it is a good strategy.

That is why I think Younis Khan dropping out is such a bad idea, he has the same amount of pulling power as Afridi in UAE among all the labourers that go in flocks from FATA,Peshawar etc.

Still don't think low ticket prices will attract any crowds at DSC during weekdays. Not being pessimistic but DSC is not the most convenient place to visit after office hours for people with no conveyance.

PCB should use a brain and arrange shuttle service to the ground.

And someone remind them of doing some marketing UAE as well... running ads on geo sports or ptv sports is not going to help at all as those channels are not available to 95% population here #fp

PCB determined to make Pakistan Super league the second best after IPL

IPL's success has led to a number of cricket leagues around the world springing up, with the latest being the Pakistan Super League, which will start from 4 February. The organisers – Pakistan Cricket Board – have huge hopes for the PSL, as they want their league to become the second best T20 competition in the world, after the IPL.

That will be a tall ask for the PCB, as other leagues such as Big Bash League in Australia and Ram Slam T20 challenge in South Africa are already quite popular amongst the fans. The quality of cricket played in these competitions is also world-class.

"It's been a hard grind and our blood pressures have gone up and down. We were told that there's not enough juice in the market. But we were adamant that we couldn't keep postponing. We are determined to become the second best Twenty20 league (after the Indian Premier League) in the world," Gulf News quoted PSL Chairman Najam Sethi as saying.

Five teams -- Islamabad United, Lahore Qalandars, Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators -- will fight it out for the maiden PSL title. Some big names from the world of international cricket have agreed to participate in the tournament, including Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen and Shane Watson.

Along with these stars, Pakistan cricketers like Umar Gul, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez will also represent their respective sides in the competition.

Though the success of the PSL can only be judged once the competition commences, PSL franchise Karachi Kings' owner, Salman Iqbal, is positive of success, after his team was launched in front of a jam-packed stadium in Karachi.

"It was unbelievable and the entire national stadium was full. It actually felt like an India vs Pakistan match. Karachi has gone through so much troubled times, like so many terrorist attacks, that people actually wanted to come out and celebrate," Iqbal told reporters.

All franchises in the PSL are aware that they might not make money from the first edition of the PSL, but they are hopeful that the future editions of the tournament will bring in the profits.

"We actually managed to get a lot of sponsors. We have nine logo sponsors and we just had a month to sell and so all the franchises have accepted that in the first year we will have to incur huge losses. Karachi team being the most expensive team, I will bear the biggest loss but from next year onwards we will start to break even and start making some profit," added Iqbal.

    SETHI OPTIMISTIC OF PSL SUCCESS

Wednesday, January 20, 2016 - Islamabad—Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi was hopeful to bring international cricket back in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is going to hold its first edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) inDubai and Sharjah with the hope that it will become the second biggest non-ICC event after the Indian Premier League in the near future.

While talking to Khaleej Times Najam Sethi, chairman of PSL, said: “We had a number of difficulties to make this happen.

He said it is always difficult to start an event like this but when we get the results we feel satisfied.

Sethi said it was a hard grind and there were countless hurdles to stage this event. First of all, finding venues was an issue as the Masters Cricket League was going to be played in the UAE.

“Signing top players was another issue and finding owners for the franchises was not easy but with the grace of God we are able to settle all the issues,” he added.

“All the cricket playing nations have started their T20 events and it was long overdue by the PCB. But, with dedication and sincerity, we are able to reach this point,” Sethi added.

To a question, he said that the PSL can be a game-changer for Pakistan cricket and Coaches like Andy Flower and Dean Jones will be part of the show which will help the local talent to hone their skills.

Pakistan cricket was dependent on the PCB but now the scenario will change. With the introductionof the PSL, there will be more sponsors and money, he added.

He said “We are lucky to have the services of top players and coaches of the world. It is going to unearth talent and chisel them into world class players. There is a lot of excitement in the air and we hope it’s going to be a big success.”

To another question chairman PCB said that we are planning to stage an international match in the near future since the security situation has improved in the country.

“The Karachi Stadium on the occasion of the launch the Karachi Kings was jam packed. It shows the enthusiasm of the Pakistani fans,” he added.

He hoped to stage the PSL in three years’ time in the country.—APP

PSL to revolutionise cricket in Pakistan

LAHORE - Pakistan Super League (PSL) Governing Council chairman and PCB Executive Committee head Najam Sethi has said that the PSL is vital for Pakistan cricket and it will open doors for new stars and also revolutionize cricket in Pakistan.

Talking to Waqt News programme “Game Beat”, Sethi said: “People of status quo are worried from the PSL which has the potential to become the second biggest league of the world. We are trying to minimize its budget. Some people from the PCB are also against the PSL on financial grounds because they are of the view that the board is not in a position to bear such huge expenses but we are successfully going to start this mega event which will also benefit our domestic cricket.

“The PSL has also created new jobs, introduce new trends in Pakistan cricket and increase our professional capabilities. We have borrowed money from the PCB for the PSL and in the coming years, we will make the PSL more profitable. We will also bring PSL on Pakistan pitches in near future that will facilitate revival of international cricket in Pakistan,” he added.
Sethi said that for this mega event, they had worked day and night which would certainly bear fruit. “Every PCB chairman has right to choose his team. We have sacked some people and inducted professional and highly educated people.

Downsizing is not an appropriate word rather we reduced staff at every level to save budget. Sheharyar Khan is PCB chairman and I am his follower. Prime Minister has bestowed a heavy responsibility on my shoulder and I will serve Pakistan cricket with dignity and exit with grace.”

As far as criticism of Zaka Ashraf is concerned, he criticises because of disinformation. “I used to have good relations with him and bitterness in our relations is unfortunate. We are also planning to regulate entry of media in Gaddafi Stadium. When the national team wins, everyone eulogies the players but in case of defeat, Sethi becomes target of every one. I enjoy my role in media and we are also going to minimize budget of PCB up to 50 crore.”

To a query regarding Pak-India series, Sethi said: “In 2016, both the countries can play limited matches series but we will start dialogue with the BCCI after the consent of our government. The chairman has powers, therefore, skipper Misbah and Younus Khan has been appointed advisor to Sheharyar Khan.”

“I was found of Civil Service but luck brought me in journalism. I never interfered in the selection matters and always welcome positive criticism. Imran Khan will have to learn from his mistakes and if he does so, his future can be very bright because he is favorite of youth. As far as Yasir Shah’s issue is concerned, we are trying to minimize his ban up to three months,” Sethi concluded.

    PCB holds anti-corruption workshop

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in an attempt to keep the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) safe from corruption, conducted an anti-corruption workshop at the National Cricket Academy here the other day. The coordinator intelligence of International Cricket Council’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), Martin Vertigen — on request of the PCB, delivered a lecture to educate the franchises about anti-corruption strategies. The workshop was attended by the representatives of all five franchises, PSL management and integrity officers of all five teams. PCB director security and anti-corruption Colonel (r) Mohammad Azam was also present during the workshop. “The representative of the franchises termed the workshop very healthy and said they would educate their respective franchises,” a PCB spokesman said. “The board will continue to engage in this activity in future and shall hold such workshops for the teams as well. The PCB will follow its zero tolerance policy towards corruption.” The PSL will be held in Dubai and Sharjah from Feb 4 to 23.

PSL is not a rival to IPL: Najam Sethi

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) chairman Najam Sethi has dismissed speculations that the tournament is directly going to compete against the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“No, the PSL is not a rival to the IPL,” said Sethi.

“The IPL is in a league of its own. There are more people in India than anywhere else in the world. And then all the top broadcasters are Indian, so I don’t think there is any comparison between the two and I don’t think there will be any competition because the leagues will be played at different times,” he added.

The Twenty20 extravaganza is going to take place from February 4 to 23 in Dubai and Sharjah with the winning pool estimated at $1million. Home favourites such as Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and the returning Muhammad Amir will be joined by specialists Chris Gayle, Kevin Pietersen and many more in the five-team event.

Sethi also said that the PSL was open to the idea of including Indian players but their respective board does not permit the players to participate in any other league except IPL.

“Indian players are not going to be playing in the PSL,” said Sethi. “It’s not because we don’t want them, we do want them, but the Indian cricket board doesn’t let them play in any other league apart from their own. Maybe in the future that will happen.”

Pakistan faced isolation from hosting international matches in the country until Zimbabwe visited the country for a low-key tour in May 2015 and Sethi believes that was the first building block. The PSL chief believes the idea is to organise the event in Pakistan in the upcoming years.

“The ultimate goal is to bring this tournament back to Pakistan,” he said. “We are going to have a clean ride next year; I’m not saying it’s going to happen but we are going to try and have one or two PSL matches in Pakistan. We are happy to pay players more if they are happy to play in Pakistan.

“We are also planning on bringing some foreign teams to Pakistan this year and if we can demonstrate a track record to show that security has been taken care of, then maybe the PSL can move back to Pakistan sooner rather than later.”

PSL in no danger of being outshone, believes Sethi

KARACHI: Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) Governing Council Chairman Najam Sethi believes the country’s high-profile T20 league will be able to make its mark despite several cricket events taking place simultaneously at the time of its inauguration nine days later.

The first ever PSL will overlap with the Masters Cricket League (MCL), which has raised doubts whether the event will be able to create the expected impact. And with major tournaments like Asia Cup and World T20 to follow, it is no secret that PSL’s backers have struggled to attract sponsors.

But despite all the teething troubles, Sethi is confident that the PSL would be a big hit and emerge as a unique brand among rival leagues of the world in its first year.

“I am very much sure that the PSL would stand out as an event despite being surrounded by MCL, Asia Cup and World T20 because it’s the beginning of a historic phase in Pakistan cricket,” Sethi told The Express Tribune.

“The fanfare and excitement will be at a whole new level for fans living in Pakistan and abroad. We need to change our brand of cricket and I’m sure the PSL would help in that as our players would be groomed in a competitive environment against and with world-class players. PSL would certainly be a breakthrough in helping Pakistan emerge as a different unit in ODI and T20I formats especially.”

Even though Sethi admitted that the inaugural league’s launch and development has been far from ideal, he assured that the end product would justify the minor road bumps.

“I would urge the fans and critics to overlook small mistakes which we have already committed and might commit in the future as well. We all will learn together from the first edition, so all we can ask is time and space to learn from our mistakes,” he added.
