Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to import Kookaburra balls from abroad after complaints from several quarters on the poor quality of locally made balls, according to sources.

The decision to use Kookaburra balls in domestic cricket was taken at the meeting of PCB executive coordination committee which noted with concern that not many good new ball pace bowlers were being produced and the players were not comfortable with the locally available ones.

"The executive coordination committee got several complaints from domestic teams and feedback from the national team coach Dav Whatmore about the quality of locally made grays cricket balls being used in domestic cricket," a source said.

According to the source, the meeting discussed the view that Pakistani pace bowlers became used to bowling with the locally manufactured cricket balls in domestic cricket but when they graduated to international cricket they found it difficult to adjust with the Kookaburra balls.

"It was felt that although the Kookaburra balls were expensive compared to the locally manufactured grays but it was necessary to have uniformity in the type of cricket balls used in domestic and most of the international events," the source said.

Director General cricket Javed Miandad also agreed with Whatmore that it would take time for the young bowlers to start making proper use of Kookaburra balls, especially while taking the new ball.

"It has been decided that the Board will import these Kookaburra cricket balls in bulk from Australia and other countries," the source said. (PTI)

    ^ Gray's.

reduce Miandad's useless salary in half and you wouldn't have to worry about the cost of Kookaburras.

I am sure someone made money somewhere in Pakistan from it. But it makes a massive difference. If majority of International cricket is being played with Kookabooras then we need to use it at domestic level. In my opinion English bowlers struggles outside of England has allot to do with the fact that they use Dukes.

About bloody time they decided to use Kookaburra balls at the domestic level as it's the one which is used at international level and will give more impetus to the upcoming bowlers on how to bowl with Kookaburra's at the domestic level and then gradually making that jump to international level.

It's about time. Now how about making sure that domestic matches are played on sporting wickets and international standard boundary sizes?

I am all for using an international standard balls in domestic match so I have nothing to complain about the PCB decision to import.

My issue is that for a country that make international quality football which are use world over can't make international quality cricket balls. The fact that Cricket is number one sport of Pakistan this lack of quality cricket ball maker in Pakistan is more astonishing.

The issue with Gray's ball is know for some time now still the company has not come up with a solution. Likewise PCB has not invested in find a local manufacture who can copy/create the standard balls in Pakistan. Importing these balls can be short term solution but in longer run PCB must invest in getting the same quality from local manufacturers.

IIRC Kookaburra balls were used before as well, but were stopped due to cost issues, happened during Ijaz Butt's tenure.

PCB try to find some solution to get the cost down. They can simply ask Kookabura to set-up a unit in Pakistan or help a local Manufacturer to get into partnership with kookabura. Otherwise PCB can itself set-up a firm to manufacture these balls for themselves & with time try to lobby for the product in other countries.

Ball manufactured in Aussie will always cost more than the Pakistani one.
