Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has questioned the mindset of Karachi players after the sacking of wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed as Men in Green’s skipper.

“When a Punjabi like me is asking a Karachi player [Sarfaraz] to exercise his authority, and he still fails, how are we to blame?" Akhtar questioned. “It is a sad scenario that only one player [Asad Shafiq] from Karachi is left in the team and he is also a very timid person.”

“After playing 64 Tests, Asad’s name should have been mentioned among great batsmen like Virat Kohli, but he is nowhere because of the mindset and nervous personality of Karachi players,” he added.

The 44-year-old also believes that Sarfaraz was responsible for his downfall, after the latter was removed as Pakistan captain in all formats.

“When Sarfaraz came back in the team in 2014, he focused on his batting and played aggressive cricket to make his place in the team,” he said. “However, when Sarfaraz became captain, he got lost somewhere. He became a scared captain as he was unable to make any decisions or selections as Mickey Arthur kept calling the shots.”

“All former cricketers kept advising him to take responsibility as we knew that if he didn’t, his place would come under the scanner,” he added.

Former pacer believes that Sarfaraz might have played his last international game for Pakistan.

“PCB doesn’t want Sarfaraz in the team anymore, so we don’t know his future,” he said. “Rizwan is likely to be preferred in Tests and ODIs whereas Kamran Akmal can make a comeback in T20Is.”

There is no bias. The attention and development has not been made as PCB can't get their office in shape. They need to develop high performance centres across the country and develop talented players from KP, Kashmir, Gilgit, Balochistan and Sindh. Otherwise to stop fury they have to play players like Sarfraz and Asad to keep Karachi press happy. Karachi has talent. It's just unfortunate PCB hasn't developed that talent. If you look most of our team is from Lahore and the reason for this is the NCA. The NCA is a facility which is able to make international players. If there was an NCA like facility in other parts of the country then I have no doubt we would find even more talented players than we so from Lahore.

Example of Akif Javed is in front of us. Raw fast bowler from Kohat. Had a few camps at NCA and now look. Imagine if this facility was on his door step.

Man Karachi is one of the toughest places on earth. It is a sprawling mega city which a person has to skillfully navigate in day to day life.

Im surprised that the current players from Karachi are so timid. I wonder what the issue is?

This is a bit of a silly generalisation. Nearly all the batsmen play the defensive, scared brand of cricket!

Azhar (a non karachiite) is the worst. Same with Imam etc. Even Babar, for the amount of talent he has, doesn’t play like a dominant batsman as he should. Has pretty negative body language for someone with his amazing level of ability.
