My first free e-mail service was hotmail and for a long time I never had any problems with it, in fact it's still my main e-mail address.

But hotmail has put too many restrictions on their free account since they introduced a paid-for service. I've recently tried gmx and gmail and both seem good. Gmail especially aims to be more of a one-stop for all your online needs rather than just an email address.

What about the rest of you, which one's the best and why?

What sort of restrictions have hotmail put on their free account? I use both hotmail and gmail, hotmail is my primary mail address where as gmail is for all the signing ups and other stuff (place where all the spam is collected too).

My favourite free email service is Gmail. Along with other pluses, it also provides its free user the imap service.

    Gmail is kinda scary now.

I used it to sign up to a car insurance comparison service. Then I was surfing a tech site and suddenly they were advertising my car insurance quotes back to me. And telling me my car make, model and registration number.

Google are taking too many liberties with our personal information

None of the free email services are really "free". Read the terms of Service. The provider has a right to go through your account and read your mail. It can do so. all free providers perform data analytics on emails and extract data. One does not spend any money, but one "pays" with a different currency: their own data.

The best approach is to have one's own email system. Failing that, get a paid account which has clear terms or service.

Now you cant even delete your google search history anymore. They will use it to build a permanent profile.
