That is never going to happen, we don't buy players over the age of 26-27 anymore

Fact is if England are to EVER be successful - they need radical reform at grassroots.

Why on earth have our kids for years been playing on full-sized pitches - no wonder we produce the biggest and strongest kids, but with no technical ability or skill. The FA have only RECENTLY changed this :fp:

What's that saying about closing the stable door after the horse has bolted ?!

On the international stage, the space you get and the time you get on the ball is limited. Ball retention is key and countries on the continent are not as backwards as the English FA and have coached their kids the importance of controlling the game, controlling possession.

However moronic parents who shout to their kids to 'HOOF it to the big man up top' during those Sunday League games would not want that - as there'd be too many sideways passing.

And please for the love of God, a flat 4-4-2 should be outlawed.

England were totally outnumbered in midfield hence why they should have allowed the wingers to get forward instead of having to track back - so that it could have been a 4-2-3-1. There should be two central midfielders - one who breaks up the play, gets the ball and recycles it and his partner should be a playmaker. A central attacking midfielder like Gerrard can then sit in front of those two - as Gerrard is not good enough to be a deep central midfielder - he doesn't have the positional discipline. He is wasted there and should be supplying the strikers - that's where Gerrard is best and at his most influential. He was chasing Pirlo's shadows last night.

    ------------------------------Hart-------------------

    --------Johnson------Terry---------Lescott---------Cole
---------------------Parker------- Milner (NOT a winger !!)
    Young-----------------Gerrard--------------------Walcott
    -------------------------Rooney------------------

would have been better but England ended up chasing the ball as their midfield couldn't control the game.

The players were just inviting pressure, sitting so deep - you have to PRESS the ball. Look at Spain - as soon as the ball is lost, they work incredibly hard to win it BACK.

Thankfully - there are young British coaches who have gone to the continent and have seen the light. But Roy Hodgson's footballing philosophy is of a bygone era.

Don't be fooled by Hodgson's 'I'm just an innocent grandpa' routine. The man is tactically inept.

I needed a few deep breaths after that rant !

But seriously, the FA have talked about grassroots reform for decades now, after every tournament failure but it never happens.

I dunno man. Even if the English started wholesale reform would it make a difference? the way certain nations play is indicative of their national psyche.

Excuse me if im wrong on this as my knowledge on football is limited. I thought (from a lay view) the Azzurri finishing was abysmal. Although they kept the ball and passed well 80% of the time, they did make some abysmal passes!

Not at all. 22 men running after one ball is not too enjoyable. :p

    And now extra time.
