Have you noticed how our strength in bowling has now shifted to spinners? In both formats the top four for Pakistan consists of mostly spinners. Im sure its the same in the t20 format too!

Asif and Aamer would be top bowlers of the world if they were playing. Afridi and Ajmal are the best in limited overs format.Guys like Azhar Ali, asad shafiq, umar akmal are young and they will take their time in climbing up the ratings. Umar Akmal is already a fine player in limited overs and tests as well. Azhar Ali has shown class particularly in safrica series

England captain Andrew Strauss and his team were presented with the ICC Test Mace by Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, after England completed their 4-0 series victory over India and in doing so confirmed their position as the number-one team in the ICC Test Rankings.

After England completed their victory by an innings and eight runs in front of a capacity crowd at the Oval in London, Lorgat congratulated the England and Wales Cricket Board and the England side. He said in a statement: “I know England were determined to be number-one and through careful planning and a series of clinical performances, they have deservedly achieved their goal. They were clearly the most consistent side in the world over the past few years as evidenced by their determination to complete their series victory here at the Oval. “This achievement is just reward for the hard work from all the players and team management and the England and Wales Cricket Board and they no doubt will celebrate being on top of the world. It was a privilege to be here at The Oval to join a full house to watch another riveting day of Test match cricket.”

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, said: “We are delighted to be number one in the ICC Test Rankings and to have achieved that position with such a comprehensive series success. This has been a real team effort and everyone of the players, management and back up staff deserve great credit. Becoming number one in the world was our stated ambition two and a half years ago and even though we have achieved that objective we will continue to look to build on this success.’

England are only the fourth team after Australia, South Africa and India to achieve the number-one position on the ICC Test rankings table. England had already sealed the number-one position after taking an unbeatable 3-0 at Edgbaston but victory in the fourth and final Test at the Oval not only strengthened their position at the top of the tree but also dropped India into third position on 117 ratings points, one behind second-placed South Africa.

Pakistan need clean sweep to maintain ODI ranking

KARACHI: In order to maintain their number six spot in ICC One-day International (ODI) rankings, Pakistan must whitewash Zimbabwe in the ODI series, which begins on September 8 in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe).

Pakistan would play one Test, three ODIs and two Twenty20 games against Zimbabwe, during the tour which would begin with a two-day warm up game against a Zimbabwe XI from August 28 in Bulawayo.

Even if Pakistan whitewash Zimbabwe by 3-0, they will get only one ranking point.

However, if Zimbabwe win all the three ODIs, they will earn 10 ratings points while a 2-1 series win will give it six ratings points. Zimbabwe will earn two ratings points even if they lose the series 2-1.

This is because Pakistan will enter the series leading Zimbabwe by 54 ratings points and as the rankings system is weighted to reflect this difference, Pakistan’s failure to win the series comfortably will mean they will drop points.
Earlier, Zimbabwe jumped from 38 for 46 ratings points and Bangladesh have dropped from 70 to 63 ratings points after the end of their series. However, both the sides have retained their pre-series positions with Bangladesh in ninth and Zimbabwe in 10th.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Australia enjoy a comfortable 11-ratings-point lead over second-placed Sri Lanka. Australia’s 3-2 series win has restricted Sri Lanka to earn only one ratings point which, in turn, has given India a chance to reclaim second position.

However, to achieve the number-two position, India will have to beat England by 4-1 or better in the five-match series which starts at Chester-le-Street on September 3.

Hafeez, Misbah and Saeed achieve personal landmarks

Australia's Shane Watson and Ryan Harris, Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka and Pakistan's Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq have achieved career-best rankings in the latest Reliance ICC Test Rankings which were released after the Bulawayo Test.

Watson scored 22 and 0 in Australia's 125-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Galle and has dropped out of the top 20 in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen. However, his match figures of 5-30 have earned him career-best rankings in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers and all-rounders.

While Watson has climbed 14 places to claim 22nd position in the bowlers chart, his 3-11 and 2-19 combined with his batting performances have given him a lift of three places in the all-rounders' list which has put him in second position behind South Africa's Jacques Kallis.

Watson is not the only Australia bowler to head in the right direction after the Galle Test. Harris, who took 0-6 and 5-62, has jumped seven places to claim 31st position while off-spinner Nathan Lyon has entered in 68th spot after figures of 5-34 and 1-73 in his debut Test.

However, Mitchell Johnson has slipped behind India's Zaheer Khan in seventh spot after managing to take two wickets in the Test.

Sri Lanka bowlers, led by spinner Rangana Herath, have also improved their rankings despite ending up on the losing side.

Herath, who had figures of 3-54 and 5-79, has moved into 17th position for the first time in his career after rising five places while Chanaka Welegedara is in 57th (up by one place), Suranga Lakmal in 59th (up by four places) and captain Tillekeratne Dilshan in 60th (up by three places).

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, England's Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell have jointly claimed second position after Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara slipped three places to fifth position after scoring only 10 and 17 in the recently completed Test.

The other Sri Lanka batsmen dropping in the latest table are Thilan Samaraweera in 13th (down by four places) and Dilshan in 29th (down by two places).

However, Mahela Jayawardena's second innings effort of 105 has helped him move up four places to 14th position while Australia batsmen making upward movements include Mike Hussey in 11th (up by two places), Michael Clarke in 25th (up by three places) and Phil Hughes in 49th (up by one place).

Pakistan's victory by seven wickets in Zimbabwe, which gave it consecutive Test wins for the first time since 2005 following its series-levelling victory against the West Indies in Basseterre, has also brought some good news for its players.

Mohammad Hafeez, who was adjudged player of the match for his 119 and 38 with the bat and 4-31 with the ball in the home side's second innings, has moved up 23 places to 65th position in the batting table while he has achieved career-best rankings of 55th and 26th in the bowlers and all-rounders' categories, respectively.

Saeed Ajmal, who bagged 4-143 and 2-53, has moved up four places to a career-best 23rd position while fast bowler Aizaz Cheema has entered in 50th position after recording match figures of 8-103.

For Zimbabwe, Chris Mpofu has moved up four places to 66th spot, left-arm spinner Ray Price has been rewarded for his four wickets in the match with a leap of 31 places which has put him in 70th spot, Kyle Jarvis is in 78th spot after his 2-96 and off-spinner Greg Lamb, who took 3-120 in the first innings, has entered in 30th position.

The player rankings will now be updated after the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia which starts on Thursday in Pallekele while the Test Championship table will be updated after the conclusion of the third and last Test between the two sides which starts in Colombo on 16 September.

India slips to 5th, Pakistan maintain 6th spot in ICC ODI Ranking

KARACHI, Sept 17 (APP)- World Champion India has dropped to fifth position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) One-day Internationals (ODIs) Ranking after England’s 3-0 series win on Friday.According to the latest ODI Ranking released by ICC on Saturday, it is Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team’s lowest ranking since October 2008 when it spent three months at the number-five position to sum up a disappointing summer in England where it slipped from number-one position in the ICC Test Championship to third spot after losing all the four Tests.

India had entered the series in third position on 117 ratings points and finished on 112 ratings points after it lost the second, third and fifth ODIs while the first ODI at Chester-le-Street was washed-out and the fourth at Lord’s had ended in a tie.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has gained one ratings point for its 3-0 win against Zimbabwe. Pakistan has gained one ratings point for its 3-0 win against Zimbabwe.
However, there is no change in its ranking as it stays at sixth position, 11 behind India and as many ahead of seventh-ranked New Zealand.

Hafeez jumps to third spot in ICC ODI Rankings

KARACHI: After a superb showing in the One-day International (ODI) series against hosts Zimbabwe, Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez has broken into the top three in ICC Player Rankings for ODI all-rounders, for the first time in his career.

Hafeez scored 188 runs and took two wickets against Zimbabwe which has helped him to climb three places to third spot.

The list is still headed by Shane Watson of Australia with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan in second position. Hafeez along with Younis Khan have made the most of the series against Zimbabwe. Umar Akmal has gained one place and is Pakistan’s highest-ranked batsman in 17th spot.

Rival captains Misbah-ul-Haq and Brendan Taylor have also improved their rankings. Misbah is in 28th position after gaining one place while Taylor has vaulted four places to 34th position. However, Pakistani spin maestro Saeed Ajmal fall three places down after the series and he now sits at No 7 spot.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka aim to better ICC Test standings

Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be aiming to move upwards in the ICC Test Championship table when they go head to head in a three-Test series which starts at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka is currently sitting in fifth position on 103 ratings points, while Pakistan is nine ratings points behind in sixth position.

However, all this can change depending how the series pans out. While Sri Lanka only needs to win the series to leapfrog fourth-ranked Australia, Pakistan needs to win by a 2-0 or better if it wants to move ahead of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's 1-0 or 2-1 series win will put it one ratings point ahead of Australia, a 2-0 win will place it on 107 ratings points, while a 3-0 win will give it a lead of four ratings points over Australia, the ICC said in a statement.

On the other hand, if Pakistan wins by a 2-0 margin it will move to 100 ratings points while relegating Sri Lanka to 97 ratings points whereas in case of a 3-0 win, Pakistan will rise to 102 ratings points just two behind Australia, and Sri Lanka will drop to 96 ratings points.

If Pakistan wins 1-0, it will narrow its gap with Sri Lanka to just one ratings point. If the series ends in a draw, then Sri Lanka will drop a ratings point while Pakistan will gain a point.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh also takes on West Indies in a two-Test in Chittagong from Friday.

Seventh-ranked West Indies leads ninth-placed Bangladesh by 81 ratings points and as the system is weighted to reflect this difference, the West Indies' failure to win the series comfortably will mean it will drop points.

If the series ends in a 1-1 draw, Bangladesh will gain eight ratings while the West Indies will drop five ratings points, but if the West Indies wins both the Tests, then it will earn only one ratings points whereas Bangladesh will concede only two ratings points.

In the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara will be targeting to regain the No. 2 position which he last held in May before slipping from that position after the first Test against England in Cardiff.

Sangakkara is currently in fifth position but trails England's pair of Ian Bell and Alastair Cook , who jointly share the second spot, by only 17 ratings points. No. 1 ranked Jacques Kallis of South Africa is 77 ratings points ahead of the left-handed Sri Lankan.

The other batsmen from either side who will be eyeing return to the top 10 include former captains Mahela Jayawardena and Younus Khan. Both the batsmen are currently in 14th and 15th positions, respectively but require less than 40 points each to break into the top 10.

In the Rankings for Test bowlers, the table is headed by Dale Steyn of South Africa, who is followed by England's James Anderson and Graeme Swann

    * Pakistan’s Azhar Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Junaid Khan and Umar Gul move up

ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangkkara has edged closer to regaining the number-one position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen after hitting an exquisite match-saving double-century against Pakistan in the first Test at Abu Dhabi which concluded on Saturday. Sangakkara, whose 211 also earned him the man of the match award, has gained 29 ratings points for his excellent effort and he is now just 31 points away from reclaiming the number-one position which is currently held by South Africa’s Jacques Kallis.

Sangakkara, who had surged to the top of the batting table in December 2007, had lost the coveted position earlier this year to India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Kallis after the two batsmen stroked sparkling centuries in the drawn Test in Cape Town. The biggest mover in the batting table is Taufiq Umar, the Pakistan opener, who has gained 17 places after his epic 236 which came off 496 balls. The 30-year-old from Lahore is now in 46th position.

Also heading in the right direction are Azhar Ali in 33rd (up by one place), Angelo Mathews in 37th (up by two places), Prasanna Jayawardena in 48th (up by two places), Mohammad Hafeez in 60th (up by six places) and Asad Shafiq in 90th (up by six places).

Batsmen losing ground include Mahela Jayawardena, Younus Khan and Tillekeratne Dilshan.

In the ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, Pakistan’s left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan has rocketed 62 places to 66th position after claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in Sri Lanka’s first innings. Junaid returned figures of five for 38 and finished the Test with match figures of 45.1-9-121-6. Pakistan’s Umar Gul, who bagged four for 64 in Sri Lanka’s second innings, has returned to the top 20. He is now in 20th position after gaining two places. The bowlers’ list is headed by South Africa’s Dale Steyn with England’s pair of James Anderson and Graeme Swann in second and third respectively.

Pakistan 7th despite playing two T20 finals

DUBAI:pakistan are placed seventh in the inaugural Twenty20 rankings announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday.

The 2009 World Twenty20 winners have garnered 97 points in the rankings for cricket’s shortest format with reigning champions England sitting on top with 127 points and Sri Lanka one point behind in second. Only six points separate the next four sides with New Zealand on third with 117, followed by South Africa (113) and 2007 World Twenty20 winners India fifth with 112. Australia are placed sixth with 111.

The ICC General Manager David Richardson said the rankings will give the most popular format of the game more significance.

“The launch of Twenty20 rankings will generate even more interest in the shortest format and will help give more context to bilateral matches,” he said. “We have rankings for Tests and One-Day Internationals so these rankings are a new addition and will help us draw the seedings for the next World Twenty20.”

England’s Eoin Morgan tops the Twenty20 players’ rankings in the batting department, while Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka is the top bowler. Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal is ranked third in the bowlers’ rankings. The all-rounders’ list is headed by Australia’s Shane Watson, with former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi coming in second. Opener Mohammad Hafeez is ranked third in the all-rounders’ standings. Abdul Razzaq is placed 10th.

    Saeed Ajmal achieves career-best ranking

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has achieved a career-best ranking in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers after producing a man of the match performance in the second Test in Dubai which has given his side a 1-0 lead against Sri Lanka in the three-Test series.

Saeed had figures of 26-9-45-3 and 30.5-9-68-5 which have helped him become the highest-ranked Pakistan bowler in 16th position. For his excellent performance, Saeed earned 62 ratings points and a jump of eight places.

The 34-year-old from Faisalabad is also ranked sixth and second in the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for ODI and T20I bowlers, respectively. Given that Saeed is in a qualification period for bowlers*, it is likely that he will move even further up the ladder depending on how he performs in the Sharjah Test which starts on 3 November (Thursday).

Saeed presently trails ninth-ranked Daniel Vettori of New Zealand and England's Tim Bresnan by 29 ratings points but another solid performance will potentially help him break into the top 10 for the first time in his career.

Saeed's spin partner Abdul Rehman has also gained two places after match figures of 4-105 and is now in 29th position, while left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan has vaulted 21 places to claim 46th position after match figures of 4-95.

For Sri Lanka, captain Tillekeratne Dilshan has moved up five places to 61st spot after bagging 3-57 in Pakistan's first innings while Dhammika Prasad is in 74th spot after taking 3-104.

Rangana Herath and Umar Gul, however, have moved in the opposite direction and have slipped one position each to 12th and 20th spots, respectively.

The bowlers' list is still headed by Dale Steyn of South Africa while James Anderson and Graeme Swann of England are in second and third positions, respectively.

In the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, Sri Lanka's former captain Mahela Jayawardena has dropped out of the top 20 for the first time in 11 years. He has slipped six places to 25th position after managing scores of six and five in the second Test. Jayawardena was last out of the top 20 in July 2000 after the Kandy Test against South Africa.

Also slipping down the ladder are Dilshan in 34th (down by two places) and Taufeeq Umar in 51st (down by four places).

Batsmen moving up the order include Pakistan's Azhar Ali whose maiden Test century has given him a jump of six places and puts him in 27th spot while Asad Shafiq has gained 13 places and is now in 77th spot after scoring 59. Opener Mohammad Hafeez has gained four places and now occupies 56th position after scores of 33 and 59 not out.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has an opportunity to move up the order in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table. If Pakistan also wins the Sharjah Test, then it will earn six ratings points while Sri Lanka will concede six ratings points.

As such, a swing of 12 ratings points will mean Pakistan will move to 100 ratings points while Sri Lanka will slip to sixth position on 97 ratings points.

However, if the Test ends in a draw then Sri Lanka will stay in fifth position, though its pre-series lead of nine ratings points will be trimmed to just one ratings point. If Sri Lanka squares the series, then the gap between the two sides will be reduced to seven ratings points.
