Irfan Blog: Left arm spinner Rehman replaces fast bowler Irfan

    Abdul Habib
    19th April 2010

Yesterday Pakistan's captain, coach and chief selector all unanimously selected Mohammad Irfan to join the Pakistan squad for the T20 World Cup. Irfan's wildest dream had come true but today in a move that makes no sense to anyone who knows anything about cricket, Ijaz Butt has forced Abdul Rehman on the Pakistan team.

Rehman will become Pakistan's 5th spin bowling option. Does a team boasting the likes of Ajmal and Afridi need yet another spinner in their ranks?

Speaking exclusively to Cricistan.com Mohammad Irfan said that he was given the news by Waqar Younis.

"Wicky bhai came and informed me about the decision personally. He told me that I shouldn't lose heart and that I was still in his plans to play for Pakistan." stated a dejected Irfan.

Irfan said that naturally he's a little down about being dropped but that he hoped it meant that God had something better in store for him.

I reminded Irfan that T20 cricket was a risky business and not the best place for him to make his debut. He would only have 4 overs to impress and T20 was a game where any bowler can take a beating.

I told him that he was better off debuting in an ODI or a Test match where he would get 10 to 30 overs to show what he was capable of.

Irfan replied "I can see the logic in that Habib bhai and hopefully you're right about this. I have to focus on the future. My next assigment is to play the Pentangular tournament for the Baluchistan Bears and I will make sure that I raise my game even higher."

In conclusion I reminded Irfan that the most important part of this debacle was that Irfan was now a household name and that meant that even if he didn't get his chance this time. He was now on the radar and that he would get his chance very soon, Insha Allah (God Willing).

"Insha Allah" came the reply but the gloom was still there.

I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for Irfan, one minute he's realised the dream he toiled for over a decade to achieve. And the next minute it's snatched away.

Irfan sounded so dejected, I'm still reeling from the shock myself.

If Shahzaib or another batsman had been selected I could live with that. But why another spinner? Why a 5th spin bowling option who will never get picked with Afridi and Ajmal there?

It just defies belief. And how can the chairman block the captain, coach and chief selectors choice!!

No wonder Pak cricket isn't going anywhere.

Has anybody seen the Rehman recently, he is completely the opposite of Poison's avatar... Agreed if it was Shahzaib or Me replacing him it would be understood

A typical WEIRD move by incompetent PCB. As long as stupids like Zardari runs the country we cannot expect the cricketing matters to be solved either.

We need FRESH leadership. These tried and failed leaders must go if we want to progress in any field.

Anyways I hope players like Irfan don't loose heart and continue their struggle for a spot!

It means that a well tried player like Sami is still in the squad?

My message to Irfan would be simple: Don't lose hope mate. Your in their plans, it's as simple as that. Keep working at it and target that test series in England.

Irfan has defied my own expectations of him. I say he go out there and do it again.

Also a report in Jang I think it was says that Irfan wasn't eligible to be picked because he wasn't part of the initial squad along with reserves submitted by the PCB to the ICC along with the fact that it would be pretty difficult to get a visa for the lad in time. I have no idea how much of the story can be believed though.

Any news as to whether the coach, captain and chief selector had any say in this whole matter?

    This is what I wrote yesterday in the Irfan thread;
    http://www.cricistan.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9177&postcount=9
So Butt does undermine the powers (if any) of the selectors! What good are our selectors then?

As much as I wanted Irfan to be part of Pakistan team, I am still extremely happy that now he is almost there. May be skipping T20 is a blessing in disguise ... I would rather start him in England where conditions are suited to his type of bowling to boast his confidence rather than on dead WI pitches where every batsman will be trying to hit six off of him.

As far as Rahman's selection is concerned, basically we'll be playing with 14 players in the WC because I don't see Rahman being picked ahead of Ajmal.

Mistake in the title; Abdul Rehman is a Left arm spinner, not a 'Leg spinner'. :)

Terrible news for Pakistan side and Mohammad Irfan. IMO, he could of been quite a handful in the WC. Pathetic decision by the clowns at PCB.
My message to him, is that not to lose hope and keep qorking hard. Hard work will be rewarded soon, Insha'Allah.

Will he be playing in the Pentangular cup, then?

    Thanks Boi, I've changed it.

I've been in contact with Irfan at least once a week since this whole thing started and in a way I feel his pain. He's gone through such a hard struggle and he's had to fight every step of the way to get to where he is and then this.

It's not the end of his story, hopefully it's one of those character building setbacks that will help make him a stronger person.

Whether Irfan deserved this call in national T20 side is debatable but Rehman surely does not, do we really need another spinner? Odds are he would just sit out the tournament and in the end collect a nice fat pay cheque. If Irfan was to be replaced they should have replaced him with a batsman.

Yesterday I was so happy for Mohammad Irfan to have been selected for the T20 WC and today I come back home and get to see this?! Abdul Rehman selected over Mohammad Irfan?! Seriously this PCB is a joke!!! Why another spinner with 2 of your main ones already there!

No wonder this circus never closes....

InshahAllah lets hope better things are in store for the big guy and that he can impress everyone in the Pentangular Cup that he'll be a part of now.

Keep your chin up Irfan and just keep on working hard on your game and you'll get there!

Why replace Irfan with another batsmen when we have Salman Butt who is capable of batting in any position :))

Surely this decision undermines the selectors and coaches role

Well well. Now I am all for spinners in squad but if they were going to pick someone with more experience at least player has to be half good. This guy can't spin, don't have variety but will play for Pakistan. Ijaz saab needs to be told to live on his pension now, its time to get old man moved from board.

I feel sorry for Irfan, Butt only made the decision due to spite as he wasnt consulted on the matter before Waqar and Afridi announced Irfan's selection.

Like Merc said, it is better for Irfan to debut in a test/ODI match because Irfan hasnt bowled on West Indian wickets so getting in rhythm takes a couple of overs and if your facing an in form batsman you might get hit for a few and then be overlooked for many games in the future due to that bad performance.

If the Butt really wanted a spinner in the side, why not put in Shoaib Malik who is a capable spinner and a good solid experienced batsman who was in the 30 man probables and has also had his ban removed.

Again the PCB (Butt) has shown lack of respect for its players and shown that they have little logic and professionalism when making decisions.

    I am reakky dissapointed

I really wanted to see Irfan bowl. Ijaz butt needs to go. I wish piakistani players all the best and I wish Inshallah they give 100% in the field. Im glad Sami is back and I hope he bowls like he bowled in Australia. Asif and Sami opening the balling would be a lethal combination Inshallah. I cant wait!

WE HAVE AFRIDI AS CAPTAIN, HE THINK HE WILL REALLY PUSH THE PLAYERS IN A POSITIVE WAY INSHALLAH.

I hope you are right but somehow I have a gut feeling that Sami is going to get killed in these T20 matches.

Haven't had much time due to exams Merc, but I was really peeved with this news. There was no "mistake" made here, it was a simple case of two parchis. Tell Irfan to not give it up; he seems to have impressed Afridi the captain quite a bit and that's not a bad thing at all. Fantastic progress from Irfan so far; tell him he's very close to achieving his dream!

I am speechless. But if Irfan is to rise, he has to move on, and keep on performing. Performance is the key to his inclusion in the team. He is in the good books of the coach and the selectors and one day they would prevail upon the Board Chairman.

This senselessness has to end!!!Surely street vendors have better organization.Do players names just get drawn from a hat to play. The coach, captain & even chief selector was happy with Irfan, obviously expecting him to make valuable contribution to the team in the Caribbean.I think the captain & coach need to address this issues of selection.Pointing & Graeme Smith would not allow these things.

This joke was inspired by Butt

The blonde reported for her university final examination that consists of "yes/no" type questions. She takes her seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration takes her purse out, removes a coin and starts tossing the coin and marking the answer sheet "Yes" for Heads and "No" for Tails. Within half an hour she is all done whereas the rest of the class is sweating it out. During the last few minutes, she is seen desperately throwing the coin, muttering and sweating. The moderator, alarmed, approaches her and asks what is going on. "I finished the exam in half an hour, but I'm rechecking my answers."
